RCHS students complete their last two years of high school at Richland College, Dallas, Texas, graduating from RCHS by taking college courses and earning college credits with a focus on mathematics, science, or engineering. RCHS students can also graduate from Richland College with an Associate degree, ready to transfer to a four-year university. While affording great opportunity this program is very challenging. Obviously this program is more challenging than a regular high school program since students are expected and required to perform at college level. In fact, students are required to pass college level placement exams upon entrance into the program. What is less obvious is that this high school program is more demanding of its students than a regular college program. Students participating in the high school program must take a minimum of 17 credit hours each semester and are not given the option to drop a class. Class attendance is critical for success in such an environment. Unfortunately, this semester our child will miss several days of college classes participating in TAKS testing. Removing RCHS students from their college courses to fulfill a high school proficiency exam requirement is a disservice to the student and discredits the collegiate high school program. RCHS students attend college classes with other college students. They demonstrate on a daily basis mastery of high school curriculum by meeting the challenges of their college level courses. Missing several days of college classes adversely affects student performance and consequently lowers final grades which are permanently recorded on college transcripts. I am writing to ask you to support the removal of TAKS testing as a requirement for RCHS students and to allow end of term exams to serve as the indicator of proficiency. Allowing end of term exams to serve as the measure of proficiency frees RCHS students to attend college classes that would have been missed due to TAKS testing. This approach supports and promotes the academic success of the RCHS student in his/her college level courses. Accepting college course completion as confirmation of high school curriculum mastery also strengthens credibility of this Texas collegiate high school program.
